You are committed, caring individual with a strong interest in healing young lives through artistic expression.

How the Process Goes

  1. Complete an volunteer application form.
  2. Request three personal/professional references. It is easy, just download and email our reference request form to your references.
  3. Complete an interview with a Free Arts staff member and determine the type of facility suits your needs.
  4. Attend a minimum of six(6) hours of training. A complete six hour volunteer training is done in September of each year, a modified three hour training and 3 hour shadowing sessions are done periodically through out the year.
  5. Complete the screening process deemed necessary by your chosen facility (criminal background checks are required by the facility and Free Arts Minnesota).
  6. Share your creative abilities and compassion with children and parents on a regular basis.
  7. Build trust with the children by arriving at the same time, on the same day promptly each week.
  8. Attend workshops and special sessions. This workshops and sessions are not mandatory but are strongly encouraged.
  9. Complete weekly surveys and mid and year end evaluations and mail back to Free Arts on a regular basis.

Time Commitment

Free Arts volunteers work in teams that rotate two or more team members on a weekly basis. Each team volunteer spends approximately two hours weekly or biweekly for the mentoring period. The mentoring period lasts from October through May.

  • Weekly or Bi-weekly team requirement: approximately 1 hour preparation.
  • Weekly or Bi-weekly team requirement: approximately 1 hour of activity with children for the mentorship program and approximately 2 hours of activity with children and parents for the PACT program.
  • Artist workshops and special training sessions: 4 hours per year.
