Most 11-year-olds are taught that lying is bad. Hanna’s stepfather led her to believe otherwise. That’s because from ages 4 to 9, Hanna was physically and sexually abused by him. The lies were needed to prevent others from questioning why she would show up at school with a bloody nose or why she had trouble sitting after riding in the car with him.
Safely removed from her abusive stepfather, Hanna started participating in Free Arts Minnesota programs. They helped her overcome her feelings of betrayal by her mother, who did nothing to stop the abuse. It was art and her adult mentors that helped her learn that the most any adult should want from her is a smile on her face.
