Five-year-old Dylan’s father was a control freak. If Dylan spoke when he was not spoken to, he was beaten. If he didn’t perform his chores, he was beaten. The few toys that Dylan owned were locked away indefinitely as punishment for breaking one of his father’s many rules. Even his next meal was an uncertainty in young Dylan’s life.
It was this uncertainty that lead Dylan to steal art supplies during his Free Arts Minnesota session. His reason for doing so was simple, he was afraid that if he didn’t take it when he could, he would never see this “cool stuff” again. Over the following weeks, Dylan learned to trust the Free Arts Minnesota volunteers, opting to ask if he could use his favorite shiny plastic jewels next time, rather than just stealing them.
