Derek's Story
Derek was a superhero. But, unlike other kids his age, he didn’t dress up or have to pretend. To protect his mother, this superhero often found himself starring down the barrel of his father’s rifle. It was at his father’s hand that the small boy suffered through unpredictable beatings and constant threats of his father “blasting him away.”
With the help of Free Arts Minnesota, Derek was able to express his feeling about the abuse that he had trouble talking about. His superheroes pictured with a “dark aura” allowed him to express the horrible sick feeling he’d get when something was wrong. With his father in jail, Free Arts Minnesota continues to provide Derek with the constant, positive support he needs.
