Free Arts has partnered with the Bloomington Theatre and Arts Center and we are putting on a four-day theatre summer camp June 26-June30 called “The Show Must Go On.” About 35 kids will participate in the camp (ages 7-12) along with three Twin Cities Theatre artists and will culminate in a 30 minute performance created by the kids.

Working towards a final performance takes a lot more than just memorizing lines and painting a set. Concepts like teamwork, forgiveness, compassion, conflict resolution, individuality, and friendship are all incorporated in exercises that the kids will engage in. By the end of the camp, the kids will have a great sense of pride for the hard work and contribution they made to the performance. The Free Arts Theatre Summer Camp will have a lasting effect even after the curtains go down.

We’d love to have you experience the show first hand so please join us!

Art Heals the Victims of North Minneapolis Tornado devestation

Esther and Courtney

On Saturday May 28, The Disaster Recovery Center at Farview Park sponsored a picnic for the victims of the tornado that devastated the neighborhoods of North Minneapolis. The picnic reached just over 3,000 people, providing groceries, housing services, and a carnival. As we all know, Art Heals, so Free Arts staff members and volunteers were there to help the kids with all sorts of art projects. We offered different projects such as community murals with sidewalk chalk, “Art Is…” frames for the kids to decorate, face painted about 600 kids, and put together 300 art kits for the kids with snacks and juice boxes.  We even had a little help from a widely known face. Senator Al Franken was there, and he sat down to help draw on the community mural.  Franken said that for him, “Art is an escape,” as he began to draw a map of the United States, starting with Minnesota of course!

We are so thankful to the 22 volunteers that came out to help us. Everything that we were able to contribute to the picnic was because of our volunteers and donations.
